AC and Your Apartment

Posted on 19/08/2014

A summer move is an exciting time, but after 20 trips up and down 3 flights of stairs it can also be a sweaty, tiring endeavor. These long, hot days prompt most movers to drop their thermostat down to chilly and expensive temperatures. After a long month of organizing and decorating, a sizeable energy bill is the last thing you want to see. So here’s an easy guide to staying cool without paying extra for it.

• Keep doors and windows closed as much as possible. It’s tempting to leave your door ajar as you trek back and forth from the car, but avoiding it can save you a big chunk of change. More than half of your energy bill comes from heating and cooling your home. An open door means your air conditioner will stay on longer (in an attempt to reach and maintain your desired temperature) as conditioned air goes right out the door.

• Leave your thermostat at a cost-friendly setting, like 75 degrees. To cool your body down from the summer heat, supplement your air conditioning with your ceiling fans. The moving air created by your ceiling fans will speed the evaporation of sweat from your skin, causing your body to feel cooler than the temperature you’re actually paying for. Basically, wind chill is your friend!

• While you’re rushing to get your move over with, don’t forget to stay hydrated. It’s easy to want to postpone meals and breaks when you’re working as fast as possible. Always keep a few bottles of water handy for healthy refreshment. A dehydrated body can overheat quickly, especially when climbing stairs and lifting heavy objects. Your apartment will feel much more comfortable if you remember to take care of your body. You don’t work out without fueling your body. So don’t try moving without it either.

As you start a new chapter in a new apartment, try out these new tips. The less money you spend on energy, the more you’ll have to perfect your interior design. Good luck, have fun and stay cool!
