How to Make Moving House Less Painful

Posted on 20/08/2014

Moving house is one of the most stressful events in your life along with divorce and death. It may be that you are moving because your family is growing and you need a bigger home. If your children have left home, you might want to think about downsizing. Divorce can be another reason for moving house. Perhaps you have a new job or one of your relatives needs to be cared for. Moving can be painful but there are ways and means to reduce the strain that comes with moving.

Perhaps one of the things that may help things along a little would be to take stock of all your belongings and sort out the things you want to take with you from the things you can live without. Make a list of the items you want to sell or giveaway. You are starting a new life so this is a good time for clearing up old junk. You will want to have a pile of items which will include everything that you will need in your new home such as kitchen ware, bedding and clothing. Finally, organise a pile of the items you might need straight away or along the journey to your new home. Montreal movers are one of many removal companies in the area that can provide you with useful advice for packing.

A couple of months before the big move, it may be necessary to book time off work in order to finalise a few things such as organising a new school for your children and order the packing boxes. At this point, you should try to have a few things packed, have them stored temporarily if need be. A month or so before the big move think about arranging a building survey and possibly take out insurance which is a requirement if you are taking up a mortgage. The next thing is to figure out how you will be moving all of your belongings. You may want to opt for a removal company or ask friends if they can help you by either recommending you or helping you moving a few bulk items. It is always a good idea to check your home insurance policy to see whether you are covered before, during and after the move. The size of your new home will affect your insurance premium.

In the last few weeks leading up to the move, you will need to contact your TV, broadband and energy suppliers to let them know that you are moving. Shop around for the cheapest energy tariff for your new house and compile an address book so you can stay in touch with your friends. When you have a couple of weeks left then update all your addresses with your TV license, utility providers, banks and insurance providers. At this point, you will need to decide times and dates for your belongings to be collected by the removal company and you may want to contact your montreal movers consultants for last minute arrangements. A few days before the move, pay the last few bills such as the milkman and your newspapers. The day before the big move, pack the essentials that you will need for the first day in your new home, clean the house and check every room for items left behind. On the final day, take readings of all utilities and turn them off. A quick sweep might be necessary and leave the keys at the agreed place or with the estate agent.
